“Love never fails. It never gives up. It never runs out. L.O.V.E. always prevails,” one poet proclaimed at a recent spoken word event called P.H.I.R.S.T. IMPRESSIONZ sponsored by Island Faith Ministries.

The monthly platform of expression has allowed people to channel their innermost thoughts and feelings through the power of words, music and other artistic talents, over the past 11 years.

Although the event was open to everyone, many of the attendees were Christian, which was evident by the content in the poems recited and the discussions among the group.

Berwick “Underscore” Augustin, the founder of Island Faith, explained that the event isn’t labeled a Christian event because he doesn’t want non-Christians to feel unwelcome.

“A lot of my non-Christian friends won’t come to church, but they will come here,” he said. “But it is a ministry. The events always have a lot of substance. We want people to feel that it’s an experience that they want to come back to. Hopefully, something is said that could be life-changing.”

In between performances, which in addition to spoken word, included dancing and singing, Augustin posed questions about various topics, such as how to help troubled young men, homosexuality and divorce. Attendees shared that young men could be helped through mentorship and by mentors modeling a godly lifestyle.

Jazz music played as poets performed. Augustin says the event was created to give young adults an alternative to going out to clubs.

Bree Joseph, 30, shared that she is agnostic, but she noticed that the poets talked about God a lot and many Christians and there wasn’t any cursing at the event, unlike other spoken word events she’s attended. She found out about the event at Meetup.com.

“I think it’s real nice,” Joseph said. “I came because I wanted to do something different. I’m tired of the club and I really liked this.”

She added that the event was relaxing and she thinks she will come again.
